I have to admit that La'gaan is a jerk, and wrote this post after seeing a lot of La'gaan bashing/defending on the Internet. I'm going to wait till the end of the series to pass final judgement though, after seeing if he gets character development. So, right now, I'm neutral towards him. Allow me to put things into perspective:
- La'gaan is M'gann's second boyfriend, after Conner- CONNER, who probably had the biggest impact on M'gann's life- ever. The same can be be said about her impact on him. I think it's pretty obvious that their relationship was special. And you'd have to be blind not to notice the tension that builds up when Conner and M'gann are in the same room.
- La'gaan is Kaldur's replacement in two ways: to Aquaman and the Team. He's Aquaman's second sidekick, and while we don't know what La'gaan's relationship with his king is like (other than a lot of respect from La'gaan's side), we do know that before he left the Team, Kaldur and Aquaman were close enough for Orin to treat him like a friend rather than a subject. As for the Team, he's the new "water guy" as he puts it- and only that, as far as he's concerned. And what was Kaldur? Diver, friend, leader, a big brother/confidant, the team's equivalent of a student mentor, and generally well liked and respected. La'gaan doesn't seem very well liked or respected, even among his own teammates (though this is probably at least partially.his own fault).
Not that this makes his actions excusable, but it sucks to be in his position- a replacement living in the shadows of the two (literal and metaphorical) heavy hitters of the team. Besides, for all his faults, he strikes me as a guy who usually means well, and miserably fails in showing that aspect of his personality, except perhaps around M'gann. I neither like him nor do I hate him. But I sympathise with him.
