Superboy (also known as Conner Kent and Kon-El, "born" March 21, 2010) is a genomorph, a binary clone of Superman and Lex Luthor, and a founding member of the Team. On February 25, 2019, Superboy had revealed himself to the world and had left the Team in order to become a member of the Outsiders,[12] and would go on to inspire the future Legion of Super-Heroes.[13]

After he became engaged to Miss Martian, the couple traveled to Mars to prepare for their upcoming wedding, but he heroically sacrificed himself to protect the Martians from Ma'alefa'ak's gene-bomb.[14] Phantom Girl saved him, but trapped them both in the Phantom Zone in the process. Superboy came under the thrall of General Dru-Zod and loyally followed him until his mind was restored and worked together alongside Superman to defeat him.[15][16][10]

Personality[]

Although he desires to be a good hero, Superboy has anger issues. Having spent his first 16 weeks of existence as a science project and mind-controlled puppet, Superboy is defiant and does not like being told what to do or being dismissed.[17] He often behaves with an air of extreme confidence, due in large part to the fact that he is Superman's genetic clone, and was created in order to replace him. This makes him exceedingly overconfident in his abilities to the point that he ignores the help of others and impulsively throws himself into situations that he cannot handle on his own. Despite this confidence, he worries about living up to his namesake, Superman.[9] Due to the fact he never really had the opportunity to interact with anyone until recently, Superboy is somewhat anti-social and has a hard time getting along with others or showing his emotions. As such he constantly behaves in a confrontational manner to all people, even those who are attempting to be kind towards him. Even simple things like making amends with people who he has wronged is a tough concept for him to understand.[18] However, he has learned quickly and has become not quite so silent, to the point of even carrying on a conversation without getting angry.[19]

By 2016, Superboy seems to have become more mellow and in touch with his emotions, but he is still angered whenever Miss Martian uses her powers invasively.[20] He has also become more experienced and uses his intelligence more, planning attacks instead of going in with physical strength.[21]

By 2018, he is still in control of his emotions and began to express his desire to step up to do more due to Superman's long absence in space. He becomes a mentor figure to Brion Markov, advising him on controlling his rage and anger. With encouragement from Dubbilex, Superboy revealed his status as a clone of Lex Luthor and Superman before announcing his intentions to join the Outsiders.[22] [12]

In 2020, he continues to remain in control of his emotions while happily preparing for his marriage to Miss Martian. He is polite and respectful towards her parents and older sister, who accept and welcome him into the family.[8] He is the first to notice the change in Beast Boy, growing concerned about his increasingly aggressive behavior and tries to keep the peace.[23]

When he found himself trapped in the Phantom Zone, he at first remained calm and rational, slowly understanding his new surroundings whilst caring for a comatose Phantom Girl and trying to find a way home.[15] However, though he remained strong in the beginning, Superboy grew frustrated and struggled to adapt to the Phantom Zone's environment, therefore causing great physical harm to his body.[13] After months spent alone and isolated with no hopes of escaping, the effects of the Zone finally began to take it's toll on Superboy. He fell victim to Zone-Sickness, causing severe psychological and emotional trauma, convinced he was a monster until eventually regressing back to his original Cadmus programming.[24] Due to his programming and lingering Zone-Sickness, he fell under the influence of General Dru-Zod, who took advantage of his current mental state and manipulated him into becoming one of his loyal followers.

He gradually began to regain his memories, but not enough to break free from Zod's grip over him, still seeing himself as a killer and fearful of hurting his loved ones. However, Superboy still holds on to one last shred of hope and strength through his love for Miss Martian and later his love for his true family; Superman and the Kents. Eventually, Superboy's mind was restored by Miss Martian after they were reunited together, returning to his normal self at last.[25][10]

Physical appearance[]

Young Superboy

Superboy, four days after his liberation.

Superboy is a partial genetic clone of Superman, and as such shares many of Superman's physical traits. At the time of his liberation, Superboy was physiologically 16 years old; however, chronologically he was only 16 weeks old. As a side effect of the cloning process combining human and Kryptonian DNA,[26] Superboy will never visibly age,[27] thus looks identical in the eight years since his awakening. Superboy is a Caucasian male with short black hair and blue eyes. He is noticeably taller than most people of his physiological age and is quite muscular, likely due to his partial Kryptonian genes. He is considered very handsome by most girls in his physiological age group and is typically seen with a frown on his face, rarely with a smile.

Superboy used to wear a black T-shirt (though he has worn a long sleeved shirt on occasion)[28] with the classic S-shield in red and at times wore a brown leather jacket, as well as blue jeans when in civilian attire. He also donned dark blue fatigue pants tucked into dark-brown combat boots with a large buckled-belt.[29] In 2016, he wears a long sleeved variation on his traditional black with red S-shield shirt and fingerless gloves.[30]

History[]

Early life[]

Project Kr

Superboy under sedation in his pod at Cadmus.

On March 21, 2010,[6] Project Cadmus initiated Project Kr.[17] It was based on Project Match, an earlier attempt to clone Superman. Because of the incomplete DNA sequences, "Match" was deemed a failure, a mistake they did not repeat on Project Kr. For this new project, gaps in the sequences were filled with human DNA, with Lex Luthor as the donor.[7] He was kept in a containment pod along with three G-Gnomes, one who would be named Kraig, who telepathically controlled him and educated him with the knowledge of a boy of his physiological age.[31]

Superboy's programming included scenarios where he had to kill a rogue Superman. When experiencing one of these he would crack his containment pod, requiring Cadmus to replace it multiple times.[32]

The Team makes a stand

Superboy and the proteges vow to fight the good fight together, with or without the the League's blessing.

Aqualad, Robin and Kid Flash discovered the Genomorph project and Superboy,[2] whom they liberated. The four youths stood up to their mentors and declared they were ready to prove themselves as heroes.[17] While Batman considered their argument, Kid Flash had Superboy stay with him. Together they faced the Terror Twins at Central City Mall.[33] They formed a covert ops team and were given their own headquarters in Mount Justice, and were introduced to Miss Martian.[17]

Left alone in the Cave briefly, Superboy experienced a telepathic reconstruction of Joker's attack on the Cave years prior, when it still served as Justice League headquarters. It was caused by a G-gnome that had missed Superboy and followed him from Cadmus.[34][31]

The Team grew restless from the lack of missions, but tried to get to know each other better. They fought Mister Twister, eventually defeating him, which renewed their faith in the Team.[18] The Team later went on a campout where they shared the stories of how they became heroes.[35][32]

The Team's first official mission was to investigate the stoppage of Venom production in Santa Prisca. Superboy and the rest of the Team eventually agreed Aqualad was their natural leader.[36] The Team was then sent to stop a plutonium robbery. They defeated Psycho-Pirate and Atomic Skull, capturing the former.[37]

Amazo destroyed

Superboy exploits Amazo's glaring flaw after acknowledging some of his own.

Superboy, along with the rest of the Team, began taking training sessions with Black Canary. The Team were assigned to guard shipments of the disassembled Amazo. Professor Ivo was able to retrieve and reassemble the robot, but the Team defeated Amazo and captured Ivo.[9]

Artemis joined the Team, just before they were assigned a mission by Red Arrow: to protect Serling Roquette from the League of Shadows while she worked on a counter-weapon to the Fog she developed.[29]

The Team took a class in espionage from Captain Atom. When the lecture proved boring, Captain Atom assigned them a cold case mission–to determine whether or not Air Force captain Nathaniel Adams was framed for the murder of his superior during the Vietnam War. The Team was ultimately successful in determining Adams' innocence.[38][39]

The Team was later sent by Red Tornado to protect the Helmet of Fate following Kent Nelson's disappearance. While the Helmet was kept safe, Kent died defending it.[40] Two days later, Superboy and the others attended Kent's funeral.[41]

Later, Batman ordered the Team to track Clayface through Gotham City while he worked on a way to defeat him.[42] The Team engaged Clayface against Batman's orders–the Team was soundly defeated, but saved by Batman at the last moment.[43] That evening, Superboy, reluctantly, tried to help M'gann cook but ended up getting covered in food.[44]

Miss Martian restores Superboy's memories

Superboy's memories are restored by Miss Martian.

Batman sent the Team to Bialya, where they encountered Psimon, who blocked their memories of the prior six months. Superboy was left with no memories at all, and was captured and tortured. Miss Martian rescued him and restored his memories, and he took Sphere as a pet.[45]

Aqualad invited Superboy and Miss Martian to visit Atlantis with him. They met Kaldur's parents, then went to the capital, where they helped thwart Ocean-Master's plot to steal Queen Mera's powers.[46][47]

Superboy and M'gann began school. M'gann provided Superboy with the name Conner for the occasion, while Martian Manhunter suggested the surname Kent.[1]

Fake Terrors

Superboy and Miss Martian masquerade as the Terror Twins for an assignment to Belle Reve.

Superboy and Miss Martian were sent on a mission to infiltrate Belle Reve Penitentiary posing as the Terror Twins. They successfully prevented the breakout attempt, and had their first kiss.[3]

Superboy, Aqualad, Kid Flash and Miss Martian were captured when the Cave was invaded by Red Torpedo and Red Inferno. They were eventually rescued by Robin and Artemis. Like the rest of the Team, he was rendered unconscious by Red Tornado, who fled with his "siblings".[48] Superboy, like the rest of the Team, was furious to discover Aqualad had withheld information about a possible mole on the Team. Batman assigned the Team to investigate reports of gorilla attacks in India. After defeating the Brain and freeing his Kobra-Venom-enhanced animal slaves, Superboy was satisfied with Aqualad's reasons for keeping the secret and picked up a new pet: Wolf.[49]

The Team was then sent to investigate reports of another Kobra-Venom operation in Bwunda. The Team were ambushed and captured by the Brain's gorillas, but eventually freed themselves and helped the gorillas stage a rebellion against their captors.[50][51]

Superboy and Wolf square up

The Team was sent to destroy the central control system being used by the Injustice League to attack a number of cities worldwide with giant plants. They successfully destroyed the control plant, and the subsequent arrival of the Justice League was enough to force their enemies to surrender.[52]

The Team was introduced to Zatanna. They went on an unauthorized mission to find Red Tornado. They discovered the robot had not betrayed them and, together with Red Inferno and Red Torpedo, they were able to destroy Red Volcano and prevent the Yellowstone supervolcano from devastating the planet.[53]

Miss Martian's grief

Superboy and the Team suffer the emotional wounds of the training session gone wrong.

Superboy and the rest of the Team took part in a telepathic training simulation run by Martian Manhunter. It went wrong when Artemis's "death" caused Miss Martian to take control, causing them to forget it was not real. Superboy "died" heroically, sacrificing himself to allow the others to infiltrate the alien mothership. When the simulation was ended, Conner, like the others, was left devastated.[54]

Superboy meets Forever People

Superboy meets a few new friends.

A week later, the Team underwent psychological evaluations by Black Canary to cope with the trauma they experienced. Superboy stormed out of his session, and took a joyride on the newly transformed Sphere with Wolf. During his outing, he was confronted by the Forever People, a group of young New Gods from New Genesis, who accused him of stealing Sphere and demanded that he return her. They eventually cleared up the misunderstanding and Superboy helped the Forever People recover stolen technology from Intergang. Seeing that she was in good hands, the New Gods allowed Sphere to stay with Conner. After returning to the Cave, Superboy admitted to Canary that he felt guilty because he wasn't devastated by the simulation. Truthfully, he felt happy during the whole ordeal because he finally understood what it was like to be Superman, putting him "at peace."[19]

On Halloween, Conner attended a party at Happy Harbor High School with M'gann and Wally. They discovered Marvin was playing a prank on the guests, so they came up with a counter-prank.[55]

Superboy and child

In a world without Superman, Superboy is the next best thing to a little boy in need.

After all the adults in the world disappeared, Superboy and the Team worked with Zatanna to find the cause. With help from Captain Marvel they were able to communicate with the adults in their own separate dimension and coordinate an attack on Klarion and his group of sorcerers, merging the dimensions back into one.[56]

Superboy attended a "surprise" party at the Cave for Wally's sixteenth birthday. He then joined the joint League-Team mission to destroy the Ice Fortresses freezing North America.[57]

Superboy defends the Logan Animal Sanctuary from attacking drones.

Superboy joined a mission to Qurac to discover why the nation's leader decided to allow Bialya to absorb Qurac. They saved Marie Logan and her son from Bialyan tanks, though Gar was injured during a reprisal attack. The Team went on to the capital, where they successfully defeated Psimon, who was controlling Harjavti.[58]

Superboy distrusts Luthor

Superboy meets his "father" for the first time.

On Thanksgiving, Superboy received an ultra-sonic message from Lex Luthor, who encouraged him to investigate Cadmus. Superboy found another Superman clone and attempted to free him. The clone was enraged and mindless, and Superboy was reluctantly forced to put him back in stasis. His mission allowed Luthor to discover the location of Genomorph City. Conner also received a number of shields to enhance his powers, and discovered that he had some human DNA—from Luthor, who had some level of control over Superboy.[7]

Deadshot beatdown

Superboy goes berserk with rage.

M'gann and Conner visited the Logans before going to Dhabar[59] to protect Harjavti from a suspected attack by Queen Bee. They and Superman intervened as Deadshot apparently attempted to kill Harjavti.[60] Superboy became enraged by using a shield and savagely beat Deadshot.[61]

Bored while the rest of the Team was on a mission, Conner, M'gann and Zatanna broke into Red Tornado's apartment and discovered his android alter ego.[62]

Conner joined an undercover mission to investigate tech robberies linked to Haly's Circus. They were able to capture Parasite and prevent him using the stolen tech to create a black hole.[4]

Superboy comes clean

Superboy comes clean to his friends about the shields and his linkage to Lex Luthor.

Superboy and the rest of the Team, now including Rocket, responded to an alert that Cheshire had been spotted. They found they had been lured into a trap, but were nonetheless successful in defeating their enemies and capturing the case that had eluded them previously. Realizing the trap meant there must really be a mole, Superboy, Artemis and Miss Martian revealed their secret links to their enemies to the rest of the Team, and found acceptance. The Team ambushed Lex Luthor, Queen Bee and their allies on Santa Prisca and captured several villains, though Luthor and Bee escaped.[28]

Fastball Special

Superboy and Robin work in tandem against their mind-controlled mentors.

They returned to the Cave triumphant, but were shocked to find Batman waiting to tell them the mole was Red Arrow. Aqualad, Superboy, M'gann, and Artemis went to find Roy, while the others investigated Red Tornado's mysterious shutdown. They found Red Arrow, who explained he had unwittingly been under the Light's control. The Team infiltrated the Watchtower and freed the League from the Light's control.[28]

As the clock struck New Year, Miss Martian and Superboy kissed. Later, they were locked in a passionate hug when Superman arrived to talk to him. The Man of Steel congratulated him, and tried, uncomfortably, to create another conversation. He inquired about Superboy's civilian name, Conner Kent, and revealed his own secret identity, Clark Kent, to him. Conner was surprised and apologized for the similarity, but Superman was proud of the connection. Superboy was happy with the acceptance.[63]

At some point, Clark introduced Conner to his parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, hoping he would accept them as his parents too.[10]

Superboy lead a squad to Siberia. As soon as they arrived, they noticed earthquakes, as was the case in Greece. However, as something interfered with their comm device, their first objective was to knock out whatever jammed the signal. After a series of fights with Shadows and hitching a ride across the river on a cargo ship, they found the jammer in a LexCorp camp.

In the camp, they also found captured villagers being wired up to ice machines, guarded by Shadows and LexCorp robots. They proved little opposition. The squad eventually came to an ornate ice garden, where they found Killer Frost. Though she had back-up from more LexCorp Spider Bots, she too was defeated.

The squad continued to trace the signal of Sportsmaster's tracer, requiring them to travel through ice caves and fight their way through more Shadows and LexCorp bots. The group eventually found Sportsmaster and Icicle Jr. in a room with a laser drill, and Superboy confronted them just as the villains were planning to leave. Alpha Squad defeated them both, and took an ancient artifact from Sportsmaster. However, the villains escaped, and the drilling and the fight made the mountain unstable.

Superman linked up with the squad, and together, they had to fight their way through a series of locks and tunnels while staying ahead of the avalanche. With Superman's help, they managed to escape and save the surrounding villages from the avalanche.[67]

Further missions to Santa Prisca and Gotham City yielded more artifacts, and they found doctor Sandsmark. The Team discussed what to do next; they discovered the artifacts were tied to the legends of Marduk and Tiamat. As disasters intensified, Superboy stressed the need for urgency.[68]

Superboy's relationship with M'gann ended after he broke it off[27] shortly before December,[59] because he disapproved of how M'gann used her abilities to extract information from villains, and she tried to make him forget that he was angry with her.[20]

On the first day of the month, Superboy was assigned to help guard Noor Harjavti at a political rally in Metropolis. He was one of a number of powerful superheroes and villains teleported from Earth[59] to a crystalline prison[64] on the Moon by Kylstar. He and the Leaguers captured with him escaped their cells, but were soon brought before Kylstar.[70] The heroes fought him,[71] and eventually managed to convince him of their right to freedom. Kylstar released all the prisoners who did not wish to join his army. Superboy and the others were teleported to the Collector of Worlds's vessel. There they helped fight the alien android and convince him to spare Metropolis.[61]

Towards the end of the month, he bade farewell to Superman, who left with the other accused Leaguers to face trial on Rimbor.[5] Superboy was also upset about Miss Martian began dating Lagoon Boy, angry when he saw them kissing[30] and thought he was a jerk.[27]

When they returned to the clearing where they left Mannheim and A'Daire, they found them alive, but unresponsive, which angered Superboy.[21]

Superboy is unpleased

Superboy expresses his displeasure about parading as the Man of Steel during his absence.

Superboy took part in the mission to guard the Earth-Mars communication satellite launch. He posed as Superman for the benefit of a press conference, then piloted the Bio-Ship when Black Manta's troopers attacked. The mission ended in disaster, with the satellite destroyed and Artemis apparently killed by Aqualad. Superboy mourned Artemis's death and swore to Mal and Karen that they'd avenge their friend, while also telling them Nightwing went to notify Wally.[20]

His birthday went by largely unmarked but was celebrated by Wendy Harris.[6] Superboy was in the Cave when it was infiltrated by Kaldur's squad. He was captured, but left behind. He was able to escape with the others before Kaldur destroyed the mountain.[72]

Superboy then went undercover as a Manta trooper as part of the Team's plan to rescue their captured comrades. They found them on an alien vessel in the Pacific Ocean. The Team and a number of kidnapped teenagers were successfully rescued, but the Team had to fight their way past Black Beetle to escape. Beetle took down many of the Team, including Superboy, with embarrassing ease, but Blue Beetle was able to hold him off for long enough for everyone to make their escape.[73]

L-Ron arrived, generated a force field around the Hall and Despero appeared, attacking Captain Marvel. Superboy left with Bumblebee to assist.

Superboy is no match for Despero.

Despero mentally subdued Zatanna and neither Marvel nor Superboy was able to take down Despero. Marvel, who had changed into Billy Batson in an attempt to stop Despero, was mentally subdued as well, leaving Superboy to fight Despero. He was no match for Despero and, as Despero was about to finish him off, Bumblebee intervened, but she was mentally subdued as well. Mal Duncan appeared, dressed in Guardian's armor, and told M'gann telepathically he was going to buy some time, so M'gann escaped with Superboy and Bumblebee.

Superboy chides Miss Martian for her insensible behavior in their moment of need.

As the trio rode down an elevator, Superboy recovered, asking what happened, and Mal told him telepathically of his plan. Superboy asked why M'gann hadn't attacked Despero mentally and M'gann said she couldn't do it. Superboy told M'gann she needed to come up with an idea before something happened to Mal.

Superboy went to assist Mal, but Despero took both of them down. M'gann then reached the others telepathically, allowing Zatanna to cast a spell that left Despero stunned and allowed Superboy to take him down. Billy then arrived and transformed back into Captain Marvel to take out L-Ron. After L-Ron activated an explosion, Marvel rushed to protect Superboy and the others as the Hall crumbled down.[74]

Superboy and Nightwing were with Lagoon Boy at a hospital, trying to calm him down as La'gaan was insistent on going to help Miss Martian. He accused Superboy of no longer caring about her, to which Superboy told him he had no idea how he felt. Nightwing then revealed to the two that Kaldur was working in deep cover, that they faked Artemis's death and that she was working undercover as Tigress. La'gaan was upset about this but Superboy told him Nightwing must have had a good reason for keeping the information a secret.

Superboy lays into Nightwing for needlessly endangering their friends with his poor judgment.

When the two left La'gaan's room, Nightwing thanked Superboy for backing him up, but Superboy sharply responded that Nightwing had no idea what his secrets had caused. He told Nightwing that, because M'gann thought that Kaldur had really killed Artemis, she fried his brain when she found him aboard the Reach research ship. He then deduces that Tigress must have kidnapped M'gaan to help Kaldur but states that M'gann may not be able to help him, meaning that Nightwing's secrets have put M'gann, Artemis and Kaldur in great danger.[76]

Superboy leads Alpha Squad into battle on the Warworld.

Superboy was among the Team members who snuck on board the Warworld after Justice League members occupied Mongul, the despot who controlled the large satellite and was attacking Earth. Superboy reported that Alpha Squad—himself, Wonder Girl, Arsenal and Wolf—were headed to the command center to stop Mongul.

Alpha Squad had to fight off drones that were protecting Warworld and Superboy was not happy that Arsenal fired a rocket launcher at some drones without warning him. Alpha Squad ultimately reached the command center but Mongul easily swatted away Superboy, Wonder Girl and Wolf and Arsenal's attacks were equally ineffective. When Superboy charged Mongul again, Mongul grabbed him, noted the symbol on his shirt and asked the Kryptonian if he thought he was the only one to come from a world with a red sun.[77]

As Superboy and Wonder Girl carried Mongul, Blue Beetle—who had secured the crystal key that activated Warworld—suddenly hit Impulse with the crystal, then attacked the rest of the Team. Beetle charged Superboy and took him down, leaving Wonder Girl trapped underneath Mongul, with Beetle pinning her arms down with staples. Arsenal, terrified at the thought of being captured again, opened the entry hatch, causing Sphere to be sucked into space. Blue Beetle was able to close the hatch and take other Team members down, and as he fired a staple at a fleeing Arsenal, Superboy took the blow and Arsenal got away. Superboy asked what Blue Beetle was doing and Beetle told him that resistance would be foolish given the lack of oxygen in the entry point, and then used his staple gun to knock Superboy out.[77]

Superboy, Guardian, and Bumblebee spring into action at the Reach-Light summit.

Along with Guardian and Bumblebee, Superboy shadowed the Light-Reach summit held in an underground cavern. After Aqualad's betrayal was discovered, the Team sprung their trap, and Superboy's squad sealed off the entrance used by the Reach. During the ensuing melee, Superboy fought off Reach soldiers and League of Shadows agents with his brute strength. He engaged Black Beetle, but was easily outclassed in their physical confrontation. Despite this, the battle ended with the heroes victorious, with the capture of the Reach ambassador, Black Manta, the Brain, and Monsieur Mallah.[80]

Miss Martian and Superboy try to convince the court

Superboy and Miss Martian attempt to sway the court's verdict on Rimbor.

Superboy, Miss Martian, and Adam Strange arrived at the court at which the six Justice League members were standing trial. M'gann told Icon they had evidence to clear the Leaguers but Icon told her it was too late. Miss Martian and Superboy appealed to the Tribunal, who admitted the evidence was compelling but the court had already ruled. When Icon objected, the Tribunal asked for something "more". Miss Martian and Superboy improvised, saying that the case was a chance for the court to demonstrate justice prevailed on Rimbor, that more cases would thus be brought to the court and thus the more "mores" the tribunal would receive.

As the Tribune privately discussed the matter, Miss Martian admitted to Superboy that their deteriorated relationship was her fault and that she knew he was dating Wendy Harris, but Superboy replied he was acting as a sounding board between Wendy and her real boyfriend, Marvin White. The Tribunal then exited their chambers and announced all charges against the Leaguers had been dropped. Superboy, Miss Martian, and Adam Strange then teleported back to Earth.[81]

Miss Martian and Superboy begin to reconcile

Conner and M'gann finally begin to reconcile their relationship.

Superboy and Miss Martian were in the memorial garden, observing Robin and Wonder Girl. Superboy asked how long they had been a couple and Miss Martian replied that Cassie got the courage to kiss Robin after realizing how short life was when Wally passed away. The two agreed that that kind of courage could be hard to come by, but they were then summoned by Aqualad to the mission room. There, Batman informed the Team that the Watchtower would serve as their headquarters because the Team earned the right to fight alongside the Justice League. Aqualad then assigned Superboy, Miss Martian, and Beast Boy to Alpha Squad to go to Mars to assist B'arzz O'oomm.[81]

During their mission to Mars, Conner and Garfield met M'gann's parents, J'ann M'orzz and M'aatt M'orzz for the first time.[85]

Superboy was the last to arrive at the mission briefing. Batgirl, Beast Boy and Miss Martian were already there, and he did not respond kindly to the latter's presence. When they learned their target was Psimon and M'gann confidently claimed she could handle him, Superboy angrily reminded her of her previous bouts with him and her abuse of powers. The mood soured even further, and the others picked up on the spat. Superboy overheard them with his super-hearing.[86]

Psimon had lured them to a classic movie convention. They split up to find him, with Miss Martian and Beast Boy sneaking into a Q&A with Sandra Stanyon. Superboy convinced her she should ask a question about Marie Logan, but at the same time reminded her this kindness was only because they were teammates.

Sandra sat down with them at the food court. At that point, Psimon trapped them all inside Miss Martian's mind. They were forced into a memory of Hello, Megan!.[86]

Superboy and Beast Boy were stuck together, and Gar's encyclopedic knowledge of the show allowed him to see which parts were in the episode and which parts were from M'gann's sub-conscience. Garfield discerned she really needed forgiveness. Superboy explained the reason they split up, and that he had only more or less forgiven her. In a reenactment of the episode's finale, M'gann asked for forgiveness in a song. With Superboy forgiving her, and asking for her forgiveness in return, as he had grown scared of being close to her and acted angry in fear of that. The two reconciled their past grievances and expressed their love for one another, which allowed M'gann to break Psimon's illusion.[87]

Using Sphere, Superboy and Black Lightning slipped into Malkovia in order to enact Nightwing's plan to sneak stealth gear into the Markovian National Cemetery and investigate the Markovburg Children's Hospital, while Nightwing and Tigress investigated the pre-coronation reception.

Superboy and Black Lightning bypassed security to sneak inside the hospital. They entered the morgue, where Black Lightning detected a hidden door and bypassed the lock. The two discovered an underground facility and found they could no longer communicate with Nightwing and Tigress. They explore the facility and found a disassembled Motherbox and four kids trapped in pods, each filled with a dark substance.

They were discovered by Count Vertigo, who used his powers to weaken them, then directed Plasmus to take them out. Black Lightning couldn't get his powers to work and Plasmus grabbed Superboy, who was weakened but able to fight him off. Superboy smashed through the floor so he and Black Lightning could escape through the sewers. Vertigo sent Plasmus in pursuit of them.

They made it to the spillway. Lightning was knocked out when he hit the water while Plasmus caught up with Superboy and subdued him. Plasmus dragged Superboy back to Vertigo, who uncovered his identity and decided to place him in the subject room for the time being. Superboy and the newly arrived Prince Brion were placed in pods in the subject room. After learning that Superboy had been subdued, Nightwing made it their first priority is to rescue Superboy.[91]

Superboy remained unconscious in his pod as Jace had Brion tarred. After Vertigo and Baron Bedlam arrived and Jace had confessed she activated Brion's Meta-Gene in hopes of taking down Bedlam, Nightwing and Tigress moved on them. Nightwing and Jace freed Superboy and Brion, but Bedlam and Vertigo escaped, taking several meta-humans via boom tube. Superboy escaped with the others on the Super-Cycle before Nightwing and Jace blew up the lab.

Back outside, Brion's powers awakened and he panicked. Superboy helped to calm him, but when Nightwing put on the news, showing Bedlam accuse Brion of killing his parents and showing a video of Brion's meta-activation, an enraged Brion set off to the Royal Palace. Vertigo and his minions then boom tubed in, but Nightwing sent Superboy after Brion.

Superboy leapt his way to the Palace, but was too late to prevent Brion fighting his uncle, who revealed his own meta-ability. Superboy protected the guests from the fallout of the fight, until it came to an end when Prince Gregor Markov called for Bedlam's arrest. Bedlam moved to attack Gregor, but Superboy easily out-fought Bedlam. Gregor then banished Brion from Markovia, and asked Superboy to take care of him. Superboy leapt away with Brion back to the others. they arrived to find Vertigo gone, Ecks unconscious and the others gathered around Plasmus's dead body.[92] As they considered what to do next, Nightwing was reluctant to take responsibility for the Markovians, and suggested Conner was ideal to look after the angry Brion.[90]

M'gann happily offered to help Bear, but was disappointed that Conner decided to stay behind and train with Dick and Brion.

Later, Conner opened the Zeta-Tube in his garage, allowing Dick, Artemis, Halo and Jeff to arrive. In his apartment, Conner discussed Brion and Halo's future with Dick, Artemis, Jeff and Lucas. When they heard Brion using his powers outside, they went out to help. Brion showed difficulty controlling his powers (and temper), while Halo manifested a new power. When Vic was overtaken by the Fatherbox within him and began to fight the Super-Cycle, Conner stepped between them. After Halo cleansed Vic once more, Conner offered Vic a place to stay. M'gann was somewhat frustrated to be taking in another stray and was upset at how little time alone she and Conner had spent together since getting engaged. She wanted a date night, while Conner suggested a secret base.

Later, Conner and M'gannn received a call for help from Perdita Vladek, after Garfield fell into a coma after putting on a pair of Goode Goggles. They went to Perdita's hotel room, and after Conner politely removed the emergency responders, M'gann went to psychically help Gar, with Conner as her anchor. By that time Gar had largely resolved the problem himself, and soon woke up. Now knowing that Gretchen Goode was involved in meta-human trafficking via the goggles, Gar was ready to brief the other heroes, but not before kissing Perdita. They returned to the Premiere Building to find Vic being tended to by his father. Metron made clear that his intention was not to help Vic but to watch him die. After Jeff noted to Conner that they only needed Metron's chair, Conner and Jeff attacked Metron, keeping him busy while the others put Vic in the chair. Even though saving Halo is a Team mission, Geo-Force insists on joining them. Superboy agrees, but warns him to keep his cool. During the fight, a still not fully recovered Nightwing began to hallucinate the presence of Kid Flash and saw himself and the rest of the Team as they were when the Team first formed. Thanks to the psychic link, Conner and the rest of the squad experienced it too.

Once they had defeated their enemies, the squad went on to help the others, but lost contact with them. Fearing Granny Goodness had control of everyone, Aquaman suggested M'gann should brain blast everyone they encounter. Superboy vehemently objected, citing the cost to M'gann, but she countered that the cost to the galaxy was too great for her not to. When they reached Granny and her thralls, M'gann followed through on the plan, but Overlord activated the Ghost Dimension generator, distracting M'gann enough to allow Gretchen to have Halo put the Team under her control as well.[107]

When the last outsider had left, Dabney revealed he was in fact Dubbilex, and that the inhabitants of the city were all Genomorphs.

Conner and Dabney took Fred on a tour of the city, before ending up in Dubbilex's office. There, with psychic help from Kraig, Dubbilex explained the history of the city. Conner felt that the city would provide Forager with a place to be free to be himself, like the Genomorphs, but Dubbilex questioned whether the Genomorphs were truly free even there. Forager offered to join the Outsiders, hoping that publicly existing as an alien might help the Genomorph cause as well. Dubbilex was moved and asked Conner if he would do as much. Though Conner had helped many individuals he had not done anything to help the Genomorph cause as a whole. Conner considered Dubbilex's words.[22]

They were greeted by Em'ree J'onzz, M'gann's sister and head of the Martian Zeta-Tube project. Bio-Ship went off on her own, prompting Conner to wonder what Bio-Ships do for fun. While J'onn stayed to work on the Zeta-Tube, M'gann, Conner and Gar rejected Em'ree's offer of transport so they could see the city.

As they walked through the city, they noted the huge amount of psychic chatter, the hostility from some Martians, and the number of Martians taking human form. They met a bunch of "Outsiders", but were soon after attacked psychically by a crowd. M'gann forced them to disperse and shielded Conner and Gar. They decided to head directly for M'gann's parents' house.

When they arrived, Conner was greeted warmly by M'gann's parents. Conner asked them for permission to marry M'gann, which they gave, but only after assuring M'gann had asked Conner's parents' permission in accordance with Martian custom. Later, in a private conversation, Conner told M'gann he noticed her parents were not as enthusiastic as last time they visited. They were interrupted by noise outside; a group of G'arrunn Martians had vandalized the house. They went outside to confront them. The mob brain-blasted Gar before M'gann drove them away.

Back inside, they asked M'gann parents for an explanation. They were told that the murder of the King a month ago had stoked racial tensions, and that Queen J'arlia J'axx's support for cooperation with Earth had sparked a backlash against humans.

The whole group went to the Science Center for the first test of the Zeta-Tube. Despite a large psychic protest led by R'ess E'dda, the test went ahead. M'gann sensed the presence of Ma'alefa'ak, but he was apprehended before he could do any harm. Despite this, the Zeta-Tube exploded shortly after Manhunter went into it.[8]

Conner put out the fires caused by the explosion. Manhunter was gone. Communication with the Watchtower was cut. Em'ree was sure the Tube had been sabotaged.[23]

The M'hontrrs arrested Ma'alefa'ak for the explosion despite M'gann's protests. M'gann and her parents went with him, leaving Conner and Gar to help Em'ree. Conner noted two burn marks on the Zeta-Tube. Em'ree re-established communications with the Watchtower, where Manhunter had arrived safely. Shortly after, communications were disrupted again; the M'arzz-Earth Communications Satellite was destroyed.

Prince J'emm J'axx arrived and asked Conner and Gar to investigate his father's death, believing it to be tied to all the problems they were experiencing. J'emm psychically shared all the information he had on his father's murder with them, freaking Gar out. Conner calmed Gar and assured J'emm they would do what they could.[23]

March 23, 15:51 UTC

On the Sacred Boat, Conner and M'gann caught each other up. M'gann's parents introduced them to S'yraa S'mitt, the Sorcerer-Priestess who would conduct their wedding. After making arrangements to hold the wedding ceremony in three days, and for Conner and M'aatt to build the sacred wedding altar, S'yraa performed the Ma'ayava'ana ceremony.

Later Conner and M'gann walked alongside the river, reflecting on their relationship. Joined by Gar, they headed off to meet Bio-Ship. On the way they were caught in a cave collapse. M'gann detected a psychic presence but could not find the source. Conner was cut by the rock fall, his invulnerability hampered by being underground and further from the sun. The trio agreed someone had tried to kill them.[23]

J'emm visited the M'orzz home after hearing about the cave in. M'gann informed him that Conner had found burn marks at the site matching those on the Zeta-Tube. J'emm asked Conner to investigate the site of the murder at the Royal Palace, but M'gann's parents objected that they had wedding duties to perform. Conner had to construct the altar. Conner suggested M'aatt go to meet B'arzz O'oomm at the transport depot, and Conner and Gar would meet them once they were finished at the Palace. Since they were splitting up, M'gann took them outside to introduce them to Bio-Ship's offspring, Baby. Conner, Gar and J'emm took Baby to the Palace. Conner enjoyed piloting her, but noted that she seemed ticklish.

At the Palace, Conner used his microscopic vision to see a familiar residue that he couldn't quite place. J'emm offered to join Conner to help build his wedding altar. Conner couldn't find a way to refuse. They went to the depot to pick up M'aatt and B'arzz, then headed for Hollow Hill. En route, they discussed the ritual they were about to embark on. Gar wanted Conner to get some sunlight first, but Conner demurred.[109]

At the lava river, the group lifted rocks and fused them with lava to construct the wedding altar. Conner thanked M'aatt for his guidance, and asked about his own wedding experience, but M'aatt's was very different as J'ann's family disowned her for marrying an A'ashenn. An increasingly paranoid Gar began to hallucinate that Brion Markov was trying to kill Superboy. He dragged Conner out of the cave, knocking Conner's head in the process, and took him up to the surface to get some sun, despite the others protesting that Conner could not survive the surface.[109]

Gar and Conner emerged in the middle of a sandstorm. Distraught, Gar ran off in search of the sun. Soon after Conner's oxygen tank was pierced by a rock and he began to asphyxiate. He was rescued by J'emm and the others on Baby, who found a recovered Gar soon after. Conner and Gar hugged on Baby, and Conner promised Gar he wasn't going anywhere.

Back at the M'orzz home, M'gann told Gar and Conner that she hadn't helped Gar, even though that was what Gar experienced. M'gann found that whoever healed Gar's mind hadn't left any nasty surprises and had the same psychic signature she had sensed at the cave in.[109]

Conner, M'gann and Gar said a final goodbye to Bio-Ship, as she left to begin her retirement.

Later, at the Royal Arena, Conner and Gar thanked Prince J'emm for inviting them to his birthday celebration, and consoled him as he noted it was his first without his father. After M'gann arrived from trying to talk with her brother, she psychically linked them to go over the evidence of the murder once more. Gar found that a mysterious A'ashenn servant had entered the Palace but not exited on the night of the murder. They found another A'ashenn, K'arr M'angg, who entered with them. Unsatisfied with M'angg's statement to the M'hontrrs, they went to speak to him themselves.

They found M'angg at his home in the A'ashenn slums and he told them that the "A'ashenn" servant was really a G'arrunn. The trio returned to the Arena and told Prince J'emm, who rushed off, seemingly alarmed at the news. As he glanced at the magic display put on by the Sorcerer-Priests and Priestesses, Conner suddenly realized what the residue he had seen at the murder site was: Martian magical residue. This prompted M'gann to realize that S'yraa had killed the king. She had been G'arrunn before taking the Y'ellonn and in a relationship with J'emm. M'gann guessed the King had forbade their marriage, and that she had killed him for it. They caught up with J'emm and S'yraa, and S'raa confessed that she had accidentally killed the King when she lost control of her powers after he rebuffed her pleas to allow her and J'emm to marry.

After S'yraa's arrest, Conner watched J'emm speech calling for an end to all caste-based prejudice. Then he, M'gann and Gar watched the birthday celebrations with the royal family. Conner then heard a noise beneath them and they went down to investigate. They found a virus bomb, which they deduced Ma'alefa'ak had planted to kill G'arrunns and B'lahdenns. Not willing to risk M'gann, who was mixed race, and Gar, who had M'gann's blood, Conner took it upon himself to deal with the bomb, despite his sun-starved state. He punched out the floor, dropping himself and the bomb into a lava flow below. The virus was destroyed, but the explosive detonated. When M'gann and Gar went down, all they found left of Conner was an ash shadow. When Superman arrived soon after with Martian Manhunter, he noticed traces of Kryptonite in the air.[14]

Before the explosion, Phantom Girl had found Conner and tried to phase shift him to safety, but the pain putting her hand in the lava, plus Conner's dense body, caused the phasing to fail part way through, depositing them in the Phantom Zone and leaving her in a coma.[16]

Conner awoke in a strange dimension. He found the unfamiliar Phantom Girl unconscious, and named her Ghosty. Conner wondered if he was dead, but noted he had a heartbeat. He initially could not touch the girl, but after realizing the ground was solid to him, he tried believing he could touch her, and found he could. As the strange mist around him cleared, he saw he was on one asteroid among a field of asteroids. He saw no heat signtaures from himself or Ghosty but did see a heat trail, and decided to follow it, leaping from rock to rock.[15]

As he became frustrated by the strange gravity and colliding asteroids, Conner cried out in anger. The heat trail he was following was then revealed to be the wake of a monstrous creature that suddenly appeared before Conner and began attacking him, slashing his back and chest. Conner tried to fight back, but found the creature intangible until he reminded himself that he had to believe to touch things in this place. He was able to hit the creature back and was horrified when it fell on Ghosty. As the fight went on, Conner realized the creature had not harmed Ghosty and only seemed to find him tangible. Conner deduced the creature was attracted to his rage and so calmed himself by thinking of mending a motorcycle with M'gann, Sphere and Wolf by his side. The creature passed straight through him and then left. With the heat trail a dead-end, Conner was left directionless.[13]

As Conner continued leaping from asteroid to asteroid, he began hallucinating friends to encourage him. First, he saw M'gann who gave advice on leaping and cheered for him. Later, he saw a ghostly Wally West, who encouraged him to keep going even though he didn't have destination. Finally, he saw Superman, but the vision turned dark when Match appeared and attacked Superman, breaking his neck. Conner then looked down and saw himself as Match, his hands covered in blood, before he collapsed.[110]

When Conner awoke, he was devastated, believing he had failed Ghosty and M'gann, and that he had actually killed Superman. Then, he saw a school bus fly past and screamed out for help. Once the bus disappeared, Conner thought he must be losing his mind, only to see a vision of Lex Luthor, who told him "Red Sun".[24] Superboy was overcome by his hallucinations, seeing himself as the weapon Lex Luthor had wanted. He saw himself as Superman's replacement, saving Lois Lane and the Daily Planet from a fire. He had killed Batman and destroyed the Watchtower. Luthor encouraged him to abandon Ghosty, who Conner saw as M'gann, but he hesitated, and was found by Dru-Zod. Zod assured him he was real, but that the other things Conner saw were a result of Zone-Sickness. Zod offered him help.[111]

Zod took them to his encampment, and introduced them to his life-mate Ursa Zod. Ursa noted their unusual condition and offered to care for Ghosty, like family. This caused the disoriented Superboy to remember moments with Beast Boy, the Team, the Kents and M'gann. Dru took Superboy to see the rest of the House of Zod at work. As the followers of Zod chanted, Superboy recalled the building of his wedding altar at Hollow Hill. Zod offered Superboy the chance to stay with them, which Superboy accepted by kneeling before him.[25]

Dru and Ursa talked with Superboy about his past. Under questioning, Superboy remembered that he had arrived in the Zone after failing to disarm a bomb which exploded. He drew the House of El crest and remembered his name as Kon-El, that Superman was Kal-El, son of Jor-El and the presumed last survivor of Krypton, and that he had killed Superman. He also told the Zods that Krypton had been destroyed when its sun exploded, that Jor-El had tried to warn everyone and not been believed, and that Kryptonians gain tremendous powers under a yellow sun, as Kal-El did on Earth. The Zods were shaken by Krypton's loss and left Superboy to go and get some "air". Once the Zods were gone, Phantom Girl sat up and warned Superboy they were both in great danger.[113]

While they were alone, Phantom Girl explained to Superboy that she had the power to take them out of the Phantom Zone, but Superboy refused to go as he had pledged his loyalty to Zod. Phantom Girl tried to convince him that Zod was evil, but when Dru and Ursa returned to question Superboy once more, he quickly told them Phantom Girl was awake, could leave the Zone, but hated Zod and would not take them. Superboy tried to capture her, but she phased out of the Zone on her own.[16]

Nightwing, Zatanna, Tigress, Kaldur'ahm and Rocket found Superboy at the fort, but were ambushed by Zod and his followers after they approached him. Zod attempted to persuade and, later, force the group to take him out of the Zone. Superboy was unwilling to go with them due to his fear of hurting M'gann the way he believed he had killed Superman. Even after he was told Superman was still alive, Conner remained conflicted due to his broken memories. Nightwing's squad was outmatched by Zod's forces, but the group was able to escape thanks to a glamour spell.

Soon after, a boom tube opened up. M'gann reached out to Conner psychically, and he still refused to risk going to her. Zod decided to go through with Ursa, Faora and Superboy, leaving the rest behind until he knew it was safe. Zod promised to keep Conner stable, and Superboy agreed to go with them.

They emerged on the planet Trombus, where Conner quickly collapsed due to the injuries he sustained before and during his time in the Zone.[114]

Eventually, Conner regained consciousness and accompanied the others outside when they detected the Bio-Ship approaching. Ursa, now the Emerald Empress, blasted the Bio-Ship out of the sky, and Superboy feared he had gotten M'gann killed. Superman emerged from the wreckage, but Dru and Ma'alefa'ak brought him down with Kryptonite. Superman called on Conner for help, but Superboy refused, saying he was already dead.[115]

As proof of his dominance, he showed the defeated Superman and servile Superboy, and prepared to order Superboy to kill Superman. Ursa had the crest on Superboy's suit changed to the House of Zod. Conner hallucinated Dru was Lex Luthor, then remembered all that Dru had told him while in the Zone, as he prepared to break Superman's neck.[115]

Zod ordered Superboy to kill Superman, but his mention of "family" caused Conner to remember his familial bonds with Clark, and he could not go through with it. Zod prepared to kill them both using Kryptonite, but Kid Flash arrived and snatched it from his hand. As several heroes arrived to fight the Zods, Conner still defended Zod, until Miss Martian psychically linked with him and restored his full memories. Superboy teamed up with Superman, now healed by Zatanna to take on Dru- and Lor-Zod. Eventually, Lor was taken down by Miss Martian, and Superboy and Superman punched Dru into a boom tube to the Phantom Zone. The battle was won, but Lor was able to escape in a Time-Sphere, leading the Legion of Super-Heroes to fear they had not won the war.

Conner and M'gann were determined to get married quickly, before anything else went wrong, and by September 15 had sent out video invitations.[10]

The wedding was held in the Carr house's garden. Conner arrived with Clark in a black limousine. He joined an ongoing conversation and agreed with Kaldur that the Kryptonians could not be held in the Phantom Zone forever, and a plan was hatched to release them on Trombus, under observation. Later, he saw the Legionnaires about to leave in a Time-Sphere that had come to collect them. They wished him a happy wedding and life, but refused to answer what made him so important.

When the ceremony began, Conner walked up the aisle with Martha and Jonathan Kent. He and M'gann exchanged vows, expressing how they had taught one another what it truly meant to love, and promising to love each other for all eternity. Lucas pronounced them husband and wife and shared their first kiss as a newlyweds. During the reception, Conner and M'gann shared their first dance as a married couple by levitating 16 feet into the air.[10]

Powers and abilities[]

Powers[]

Superboy ripping tank

Superboy taking apart a tank.

Super leap

Superboy utilizes his super leap abilities in lieu of flight.

  • Kryptonian physiology: As a binary clone, he has most of the physical abilities of a Kryptonian who has absorbed the solar energy of a yellow sun. However, due to the human DNA supplied by Lex Luthor, he lacks the more advanced powers of flight and heat vision and presumably is incapable of ever acquiring them naturally.[7] In addition, his existing powers are considerably inferior to Superman's though whether this is due entirely to him being only a partial kryptonian clone or if his physiological age also exacerbates this (Conner is biologically only around 16–18 years old and not a fully developed adult) is unclear.[17] Since the Light created Conner to replace or destroy Superman and the fact that they created special equipment to temporarily grant Conner full Kryptonian power, it's possible a method could be found to artificially and permanently grant Conner his full powers.
    • Super strength: This is one of Superboy's main abilities, allowing him to easily pick up or carry heavy objects.[17]
      • Super leap: To compensate for his inability to fly like Superman, Superboy uses the super-strong muscles in his legs to jump incredible distances and heights.[17]
    • Super speed: Although not as fast as Kid Flash, Superboy can move at meta-human speeds especially when charging at enemies.[2]
    • Invulnerability: Like Superman, Superboy is nearly indestructible. This invulnerability allows him to rush into dangerous scenes with little care for what might actually happen. Out of all his teammates, Superboy has taken the most punishment from their missions but has displayed no lasting injuries. He has been tackled through walls,[17] shot with guns and explosives,[17] had his feet dipped in lava, and has come out with no obvious physical damage.[45] He has yet to be permanently injured, but he does experience pain.
      • Accelerated healing: Under a yellow sun, pre-existing injuries heal with extraordinary speed.[115]
    • Super hearing: Superboy can pick up the faintest of sounds over long distances,[17] as well as high frequencies not audible to regular humans.[7]
    • Infrared vision: This ability allows Superboy to visually detect heat signatures, allowing him to easily see in the dark.[36]
    • Microscopic vision[109]
    • Telescopic vision[120]

When using shield patches:

Abilities[]

Aqualad schooled by Superboy

Superboy is an adept hand-to-hand combatant. He was even able to best Aqualad during a sparring match.

  • Hand-to-hand combatant: While normally relying on his sheer strength, Superboy has developed highly proficient combat skills from his training under Black Canary. He is especially good at grappling and takedowns.[40] By 2016, he had taken an active role in training newer members of the Team.[121]
  • Genomorph programming: While Superboy was being force grown, G-Gnomes telepathically fed him information in lieu of a traditional education:[17]
    • Multilingualism: Superboy can understand and speak many languages outside of English. He is at least fluent in Spanish,[36] Atlantean,[46] French, Korean, Arabic and Russian, among other languages.[122]
    • Encyclopedic knowledge: Likely due to the G-Gnomes, Superboy has an encyclopedic knowledge of World History.[1]
  • Mechanical Aptitude: By 2018, Conner learn how to repair motorcycles. He was so good at it that it became his profession in Happy Harbor.[94]

Equipment[]

Vehicles[]

  • Motorcycle: Superboy has his own personal mode of transportation: a customized motorcycle. He used this on his mission to guard the Amazo parts. He left it behind to go after the MONQIs.[9] He liked working on it in his spare time.[1][48]
  • Sphere (Super-Cycle): This piece of New Genesis technology is actually a "she" that bonded with Superboy.[45] Some months later, Sphere's abilities were brought to light.[19]

Former equipment[]

  • Shields: The shields given to him by Lex Luthor allow Superboy to suppress his human DNA, permitting his full Kryptonian abilities to surface for an hour though as a side effect Conner becomes more aggressive and angry during that time similarly to the other clone of Superman, Match.
  • Solar suit: Upon being released from his cryogenic suspension in Cadmus Labs, Superboy wore a white solar suit with a red Superman S-symbol on the chest. The suit allowed him to absorb Yellow Sun radiation to fuel his powers even underground.[2] The suit was damaged during the fight with Blockbuster.[17] While staying with Wally West, he continued to wear the tattered solar suit until he bought new clothes from Forever Sixteen in the Central City Mall three days later.[33] A solar suit was placed on display in the Fortress of Solitude and Superboy briefly donned it while serving General Dru-Zod.[115]

Weaknesses[]

Red sun

The "Red Sun" code words would instantly immobilize Superboy.

  • Code words (formerly): When Lex Luthor said the words "Red Sun" to Superboy, he blacked out for several hours, remaining completely still until he snapped out of the hypnotic trance.[7] Miss Martian psychically excised this programming from his mind, and confirmed that no other code words were implanted.[28]
  • Kryptonite: Due to his Kryptonian DNA, Superboy is vulnerable to the unique radioactive properties of this green mineral. However, this vulnerability is not to the degree of full Kryptonians such as Superman, due to him being only half Kryptonian.[28]
  • Solar power dependency: Due to his Kryptonian physiology, Conner's powers are solar based. As a result, the further he is from the sun, the less solar energy he can absorb. The effect is not immediate, but as seen on Mars, prolonged distance from the sun can lower his strength and even remove his invulnerability.[23] Exposure to red sunlight causes him to lose his powers.[114]

Relationships[]

Superman[]

Main article: Superman
Superboy and Superman

At first, the two heroes had a standoffish relationship.

Superboy is Superman's partial clone. During incubation at Cadmus Labs, Superboy was programmed to both take over for Superman if he ever died and to defeat Superman if he ever went bad.[32] He respected Superman, to the extent that Aqualad was able to convince him to resist the G-Gnome's telepathic control by asking "What would Superman do?".[17]

Originally, Superboy longed to meet Superman, but when they finally met, Superboy was angered by Superman's initial reaction of surprise and near disgust at having a clone. After the matter was explained, Superman tried to show some support for him, but failed and quickly excused himself.[17] Over the next several days, while staying with Wally West, Superboy repeatedly wondered if Superman knew where he was, and when they'd meet again.[33]

For the first six months after that, Superman had actively avoided Superboy and tried to push responsibility of him onto Batman and Red Tornado. Even when Superboy directly asked Superman to help him figure out the extent of his powers, Superman merely brushed it off and quickly left. This apparent rejection made Superboy angry and led him to make several reckless errors of judgment, such as attempting to take down the powerful Amazo by himself.[9]

Superboy and Superman patch things up

Eventually, Superman came to accept Superboy.

Following being saved from Vandal Savage's mind control of the Justice League, Superman has come to accept Superboy. He revealed his secret identity, as well as approved of Superboy taking on his last name "Kent".[63] Since 2011, Clark has given Conner a Kryptonian name, Kon-El. He now views Superboy as his little brother as opposed to his son.[5] Superboy and Superman's closeness had grown to the point when Superboy had asked Superman to be his best man for his upcoming wedding to Miss Martian to which Superman happily accepted and gave the couple his blessings for their marriage.[105][8]

Following Conner's death, Superman falls into mourning over his loss and blames himself for failing to save him, believing if he'd only gotten to Mars sooner than Superboy might still be alive. Clark also expresses his deep regret for how unfairly he had treated Conner in the beginning of his life and for wasting all the time they could have shared all those years ago.[123] When Clark learned that Conner had survived, he was utterly relieved and became determined to save him from the Zods.[115] After Superboy's mind was restored, they both fought in-unison and defeated the Zods together and afterwards, Clark fulfilled his role as Conner's best man at his and M'gann's long awaited wedding.[10]

Lex Luthor[]

Main article: Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor provided his genetic material to Superboy, and has tauntingly referred to him as his "son". Knowing him as a villain, Superboy disapproved of his connection to Lex Luthor, but Lex exploited it in the hopes of bringing Superboy to the Light.[7]

Aqualad[]

Main article: Aqualad

Even before being elected leader, Aqualad tried to keep the Team together. This involved actively persuading Superboy to care more about his surroundings.[18] Apart from Miss Martian, Superboy is closest to Aqualad, as he admires his serenity.[124]

He was greatly devastated when Aqualad was seemingly a traitor and nearly attacked him in anger but was repelled. [5] When Nightwing divulged that Aqualad was undercover, Superboy angrily brought up how Aqualad suffered a mental breakdown because of Nightwing's secrets. [76]

Miss Martian[]

Miss Martian and Superboy liked each other from the moment they met,[17] and throughout their missions came closer and closer together.[45] They eventually became a couple but did not tell their friends.[48] Nonetheless, Aqualad and Robin found out easily,[53] as did Zatanna, who informed Artemis, who told Wally and the latter was very sad to hear the news.[55]

The relationship became strained when Miss Martian started to use her telepathy to extract information from their enemies, leaving them in a catatonic state. The last straw came when she attempted to telepathically alter his memories.[87] He was still angry at her whenever she used her powers like that,[21] and was uncomfortable with seeing her with her new boyfriend, Lagoon Boy.[30]

Both still loved each other,[87] and M'gann ended her standing with Lagoon Boy, admitting he was just a rebound.[79] They grew closer, but on a mission to Mars, Conner became scared and their distant status returned. They finally mended their relationship, both apologizing and confessing their love, when Psimon trapped them inside M'gann's deeply troubled mind.[87] Two years later, Conner proposed to M'gann and she accepted.[88] Although their engagement was hindered by housing newly turned meta-humans and secrets within the Justice League and Team, their relationship remained strong as well as their devotion to each other.[101][12]

At last, Conner and M'gann finally prepared to marry and traveled to Mars to hold a traditional wedding ceremony until Superboy heroically sacrificed his life to save the Martian race from a gene bomb, leaving Miss Martian completely heartbroken and devastated.[8][14] However, unknown to M'gann, Conner survived the explosion, having secretly been saved by Phantom Girl, who accidentally sent them both into the mysterious Phantom Zone.[16] After months apart, Superboy and Miss Martian were at last reunited and not long after their reunion, the couple finally tied the knot in a private wedding ceremony among their friends and family.[10]

Artemis[]

Main article: Artemis

Artemis had a crush on Superboy from the moment she first saw him—before she came on the Team.[125] During her first mission, she did not shy away of openly flirting with him, which made Superboy uncomfortable.[29] She was distraught when Zatanna pointed out to her that he was in a relationship with Miss Martian.[55]

Superboy first met General Zod while wandering in the Phantom Zone.[111] Due to the effects of Zone-Sickness, Superboy reverted back to his Cadmus programming, and he pledged total loyalty to Dru-Zod and the House of Zod.[25] Superboy attempted to save him when he was being taken by the Phantom Zone projector.[112] When Superboy's mind was restored, he was angered at Dru-Zod for using and manipulating him, yet expressed his gratitude for having been saved by Dru-Zod, giving him the chance to peacefully surrender.[10]

Superboy

Superboy's bio data

  • In the comics, when Superboy was first introduced, he lacked all the powers he currently demonstrates in the cartoon series. Due to the fact he escaped his growth tube before reaching maturity and due to issues regarding cloning a Kryptonian (a Kryptonian is completely indestructible thus collecting a DNA sample is nearly impossible), Superboy was instead given tactile telekinesis, which allowed him to simulate Superman's primary powers (flight, strength, invulnerability). As time passed and Superboy matured, he began to manifest all the normal Kryptonian powers, causing him to use his tactile telekinesis less and less. In Young Justice, however, Superboy has not developed tactile telekinetic abilities. Instead, his powers are based on 1938 Superman's, which tended to be extensions of what humans were capable of, e.g. super leaping instead of flight.[126]
  • Superboy's personality is based on his portrayal in Teen Titans compared to the original Young Justice series. In Young Justice, Superboy was immature, talkative, flirtatious and comically rude, which slowly was replaced with a more mature attitude. Compare this to Teen Titans where his personality is more brooding and somber, with bouts of uncontrollable anger and with a lack of understanding basic human interactions at times.
  • Superboy's romantic relationship with Miss Martian is something introduced specifically for the series. In the comics, Superboy had a long-term relationship with Wonder Woman's second sidekick Wonder Girl (Cassandra Sandsmark), that ended recently. Before that, he had multiple love interests, including Tana Moon, Roxy Leech, and Serling Roquette.
  • This is his first animated appearance.
