The Justice Society of America[1] was a crime-fighting group of superheroes during the twentieth century. It was the precursor of the Justice League.[2]

The Justice Society was active from 1940 to 1951. In the period 1941-1945, the Society expanded to become the wartime All-Star Squadron.[3]

After U.S. government pressure for heroes to reveal their identities, many members left to either retire or operate more quietly, leaving Jay Garrick alone and effectively disbanding the Society.[4]
