Miss Martian and Superboy

Miss Martian and Superboy.

Miss Martian and Superboy are founding members of the Team who are in a serious relationship with a rocky history. Although they originally wished to keep their relationship a secret, all the other members of the Team and Justice League, eventually found out. Despite the happiness and the stability of their relationship, Superboy broke up with Miss Martian because she attempted to abuse her powers on him. They eventually reconciled and two years later, Superboy proposed to Miss Martian and they got engaged. In the days leading up to their long-awaited wedding, Miss Martian and Superboy were separated when Superboy supposedly died after he sacrificed himself to save the Martian population, unaware he was saved and sent the Phantom Zone. Miss Martian and Superboy are now happily reunited and at long last finally got married.

History[]

Meeting[]

Meet Megan

Superboy and M'gann meet for the first time.

Superboy, just released from Cadmus three days prior, was introduced to Miss Martian on July 8, at the formation of the Team. She took an instant liking to him,[1] and with the knowledge that they would both be living in the Cave, suggested they'd pick adjacent bedrooms. He went for a closet hardly big enough for the two of them.[2]

Initially, they did not get off to a good start, but this was mostly because both were practically aliens unfamiliar with how to live on Earth. Superboy did not appreciate Miss Martian telepathically conversing with him, and lashed out against her for it. The Team had to tell both that that was not normal human behavior. Miss Martian apologized for the invasion of privacy, but Superboy was not as quick on his apologies.[3]

Miss Martian was still attracted to him, and gravitated towards him on early missions.[4][5]

Competition[]

Both were the subject of attention from other teammates. Kid Flash liked Miss Martian, and new member Artemis made no attempt to hide her attraction to Superboy.

Competition

Miss Martian gets competition.

Kid Flash's attempts to get M'gann to like him were, as Robin put it, both not very subtle and downright creepy.[6] His actions to impress her annoyed others, especially Artemis, because during a mission to the Tower of Fate, his lies nearly got the Team killed.[7]

Artemis, on the other hand, liked Superboy (at least in appearance) since she first saw him, even before she joined the Team. She witnessed the fight between Superboy and Amazo at the Gotham Academy, and followed him.[8] During her first mission with the Team, she was openly interested in the young boy, which unnerved Superboy, and annoyed Miss Martian. She shrugged off the dismissive comments on her behavior.[9]

Towards a relationship[]

Miss Martian and Superboy had some close moments together, as they spent quite a lot of time in the Cave with Red Tornado only sporadically checking in. The attraction was obvious to the trained eye; even Clayface noticed it and used it to take them down: Miss Martian was thrilled when "Superboy" called her "gorgeous".[10]

M'gann liked making him dinner, and on one occasion asked for his help. He wanted to help, but Miss Martian's excitement caused him to be covered in the ingredients. She cleaned him up, and they stared at each other for a while, but nothing apparently came of it.[11]

Sort of kiss

Their first kiss. Sort of.

Superboy learned about Miss Martian's true appearance during a mission to Bialya.[12] Their minds had been wiped by Psimon, and when Miss Martian linked their minds to restore it, he caught a glimpse of her white Martian look.[13] He decided not to tell her, as it didn't matter to him, and because he believed she should be allowed to reveal the truth when she was ready.[12] After Psimon was defeated, they almost kissed, but Sphere interrupted them.[13] A semi-kiss would take place, days later, though neither truly considered it their first kiss. During a trip to Atlantis, Ocean-Master destroyed Superboy's rebreather. In the midst of battle, Miss Martian had to lock their lips, and feed him the oxygen she breathed in through her gills. Superboy was eventually given a new rebreather.[14]

As they prepared for school, Aqualad instructed them to take Earth names. M'gann had already thought of hers, and also gave Superboy one: Conner.[15] It was her favorite name, taken from the Hello, Megan! TV show she identified with.[16]

At school, it was obvious to some, like Karen Beecher, that they were an item. M'gann certainly felt that way when, after she was wet from her induction into the Bumblebees, he offered to carry her books. He only saw the practical reason, keeping them dry.[15]

The kiss[]

They were sent on a mission in Belle Reve together, disguised as the Terror Twins. During an attempted breakout, Miss Martian was put on ice by Killer Frost. After defeating her and her ally Devastation (with the unwitting help of Icicle Jr.), Superboy found her frozen in ice. At his urging, she used her telekinesis to escape. Overwhelmed by their emotions, they shared a passionate kiss, marking the beginning to their romantic relationship.[17] Their relationship was stable,[18] though Miss Martian got annoyed when he became too protective. He eventually apologized, stating he was just worried for her and they agreed to a balance to ensure their romance would not get in the way during missions.[19]

The secret relationship[]

M'gann and Conner kissing

Miss Martian and Superboy's secret romance.

Though they were in love, they wanted to keep their relationship a secret from the others. This was partly because they thought it was private, but also because they did not want their judgment to be called into question during missions.[20] It didn't last long; by October 1st, just over two weeks after the kiss, Robin and Aqualad had already figured it out. Aqualad had seen it coming and felt no need to tell either Artemis nor Kid Flash.[21]

Zatanna picked it up easily too. She came over for a Halloween party, and noticed the attraction when M'gann worked on Conner's costume. She let it slip to Artemis, whose mood was ruined, as she still considered Conner an option.[22]

Wally was still unaware, and still trying to get together with M'gann. This annoyed both Superboy[22] and Artemis. During Wally's surprise birthday party, while he was desperately trying to score a kiss from M'gann, Artemis told him. He was bummed out.[23]

On November 22, the League discovered that Miss Martian had been pretending to be Black Canary during a lover's game. Black Canary didn't take it well but calmed down quickly.[16]

Stability[]

True love

The Light had discovered M'gann's true appearance, and Queen Bee blackmailed her with it. Though she told the Team her usual appearance wasn't her normal look, she lied again by claiming to be a Green Martian. She also came clean about modeling her life—and by extension, Conner's—on Hello, Megan!. He didn't mind;[16] he also knew she wasn't telling the truth. After Superboy and Artemis told the Team about their true heritage, Miss Martian decided it was time to show them hers. She was afraid of rejection, though Superboy told her he had always known. This, and Aqualad's reaction, gave her confidence a boost. Their relationship survived this small dent,[12] and they became more open with it, also to the League.[24]

Breakup[]

They remained together for the next five years until their relationship ended shortly before December 1, 2015,[25]. Superboy and Miss Martian began arguing over Miss Martian's misuse of her psychic powers when she began ripping into enemies minds and left them in catatonic states. Conner strongly disapproved of the way M'gann used her powers, appalled by her actions and behavior as well as realizing she was acting no better than Psimon, while M'gann refused to admit her wrongdoings, believing her actions to be justified. Despite this, Superboy did not report Miss Martian to either the Team or the Justice League, hoping he mattered more to her that could convince her to stop.

However, M'gann had tried to psychically erase some of Conner's memories to make him forget he was upset her, but he caught her in the act. Conner was left deeply hurt and betrayed by her actions towards him, especially since M'gann willingly used her "touch" inside his mind, something he considered to be very precious to him and with this act, she had perverted it in his eyes. Realizing she finally went too far and left with no other choice, Superboy broke off their relationship.[26][27][28]

They maintained a working relationship on the Team; both considered themselves professional enough not to let their history obstruct their work.[25] Shortly after their break up, M'gann started dating Lagoon Boy, which Superboy had issues with, but in spite of that and the fact Superboy thinks La'gaan is a jerk, he still thinks La'gaan treats her well.[29][26] However, it was clear that despite their break up and issues, Miss Martian and Superboy are still in love each other.[26][27]

Reconciliation[]

Eventually, Miss Martian came to realize the error of her ways on how she had been abusing her powers as well as realizing she hadn't been fair to Lagoon Boy, acknowledging him as her rebound boyfriend and broke off the relationship.[30] On June 20, M'gann apologized to Conner and took full responsibility for what she had done, greatly mending their relationship.[31] Everyone around them thought they were getting better, until a mission to Mars where it all fell apart again.[32] Superboy had grown scared of getting close to her again after what had happened.[28]

Miss Martian and Superboy Reconcile

Miss Martian and Superboy's reconciliation.

During a mission to locate Psimon, the villain trapped Miss Martian, Superboy, Beast Boy and Sandra Stanyon inside M'gann's mind. M'gann believed herself to be the character Megan Wheeler from Hello, Megan! and they were all re-enacting an old episode. "Megan" was worried "Conner" wouldn't like the song she was to sing at a talent show, but especially that he wouldn't forgive her. Forgiveness was the key to get M'gann's mind back in order and get out. Both sides felt they had to forgive the other.

After learning the true reason for the breakup, Gar agreed she went too far, and that Conner didn't have to forgive her. If he did, it has to be earnest: as both a telepath and a girlfriend of five years, M'gann would be able to tell if he was insincere. M'gann dealt with her forgiveness in a different way; she sang a deeply heartfelt and heavy song, expressing how much she regretted damaging her relationship with Conner and admitting she still loved him. After hearing the apology, Conner forgave her for everything. He confessed his enduring love for her and also apologized for his recent distant behavior.

With their relationship fully reconciled and truly restored, M'gann, Conner, Garfield and Sandra are finally set free from M'gann's mind.[28]

Engagement[]

Conner and M'gann Engagement

Conner and M'gann are engaged.

After sorting out their relationship, it grew back to being strong and stable over the next two years. Miss Martian and Superboy moved into together in Happy Harbor after graduating from Ivy University and acquired jobs as a motorcycle mechanic and student counselor respectively.[33][34][35] They were calm and happy together and found Happy Harbor to be their own Fortress of Solitude, allowing themselves to be together and away from their heroic duties and responsibilities.[36] Conner decided to take the next big step and planned to ask M'gann to marry him, but waited for the right moment to pop the question. On July 29, Conner finally proposed to her and M'gann happily accepted.[37]

Shortly after they got engaged, however, Miss Martian and Superboy quickly found themselves housing Brion Markov, Forager and Victor Stone, who were banished, exiled or freely left their homes.[38][39][40] Although they both understood and sympathised with their situations, Conner and M'gann began to grow frustrated with their current living arrangements since their new house guests prevented the couple from spending quality time together since their engagement.[36] Eventually, Superboy decided to rejoin the Team to spend more time with Miss Martian and after the Outsiders were formed, Brion, Forager and Victor moved out of their home and into the Premiere Building.[41][42]

After Conner learned M'gann was part of Batman's conspiracy of using the Light's own tactics against them behind everyone's back, he was greatly upset. He reminded her the last time members of the team pulled a stunt like that and how she nearly ended their relationship.[43] M'gann offered the ring back but Conner quickly refused to end their engagement and apologized for bringing up old wounds.[44]

Preparing for marriage[]

M'gann and Conner's Ma'ayava'ana ceremony.

One year later, Conner and M'gann were at long last finally preparing to get married. The couple planned to first travel to Mars to hold a traditional wedding ceremony alongside Miss Martian's family with Garfield and Martian Manhunter joining them and upon their return to Earth, they would hold a civil ceremony. However, they discovered that most of the Martian population didn't approve of their upcoming marriage, including a majority of M'gann's family, minus her parents, J'ann M'orzz and M'aatt M'orzz, older sister, Em'ree J'onzz and Prince J'emm J'axx.

Despite the planet's disapproval of their relationship and finding themselves getting drawn into its current tensions, as well as a murder mystery, Conner and M'gann were determined not to let anything interfere with their upcoming wedding. However, unknown to the couple, they were secretly being followed by Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl and Chameleon Boy who were keeping close watch over Superboy in order to protect him against Lor-Zod targeting him.[45][46]

Conner and M'gann took part in Ma'ayava'ana, a pre-wedding ritual and were bestowed the gift of love with the actual wedding set to take place in three days. Alongside M'gann's family and their friends, preparations were soon underway and M'gann and Conner worked on building the sacred altar and crystal canopy for the ceremony while finding themselves sorting out rising issues with Em'ree and Garfield.

The couple happily reminisced about their life together throughout the past 10 years, with M'gann and Conner's love stronger than ever and excited over their impending wedding in the few days remaining. When construction on the wedding altar was completed, Conner and M'gann took a moment to admire their work and shared a loving kiss.[47][48]

Separation[]

Superboy assures Miss Martian

Miss Martian and Superboy's final moments before their tragic separation.

After helping solve the murder of King S'turnn J'axx and the prejudice and castle system on Mars finally beginning to break down, all seemed well until Superboy discovered an Apokoliptan bomb during Prince J'emm's birthday celebration. The bomb contained a virus that would kill every Green and Red martian in the vicinity, planted by M'gann's younger brother, M'comm M'orzz. In order to save the Martian race, Superboy destroyed the virus by submerging himself and the bomb into a lava pitt, but in the process sacrificed his life and was killed in the explosion since he was gravely weakened due to the lack of sunlight or oxygen on Mars. Miss Martian desperately searched and attempted to call out to Superboy, but felt no trace of his mind touch and discovered a shadow of ash along with traces of Kryptonite in the air. Miss Martian was left deeply heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Superboy, sobbing over his demise at their completed wedding altar.[49]

In the weeks following Superboy's death, Miss Martian angrily confronted her brother and was ready to avenge Superboy until M'comm admitted he knew nothing of the Kryptonite. M'gann was left shocked by the revelation and fell further into despair and mourning over Conner's death since she had no one to hold responsible and the Justice League ran out of leads in the investigation.[50] The loss of Conner left M'gann broken and empty. She closed herself off both mentally and emotionally from those around her, unsure of how she would go on with her life without him. Em'ree was concerned and accompanied her and J'onn back to Earth. En route, Em'ree provoked M'gann in order to get her to open up. M'gann began to accept the support of her family, helping her to process her grief.[51]

However, unknown to Miss Martian, Superboy is revealed to be alive and was saved by Legionnaire member, Phantom Girl. Before the bomb exploded, Phantom Girl reached out and attempted to phase Superboy to her home dimension, but between the pain and his body's high density, she accidentally sent them both to the Phantom Zone instead and was left comatose.[52] Conner finds his psychic link to M'gann has been severed and attempts to find a way to escape the dimension. He follows a mysterious heat signature, but is attacked by a Devourer. Conner attempts to fight it, only to be badly injured until he realizes the creature is drawn to his rage and calms down by imaging being happily married to M'gann.[53][54]

With no other ideas on escaping, Superboy continues traveling further into the Phantom Zone and tries to remain strong in the hopes of finding a way back to Miss Martian. However, he begins to lose hope and starts to suffer from Zone-Sickness, believing he has become a monster and has failed M'gann. In spite of his hallucinations and amnesia, Conner still holds on to his love and the memory of M'gann as his last connection to both his hope and sanity.[55][46]

Reunion[]

Months later on September 13, Miss Martian is contacted by Prince J'emm J'axx on the Watchtower, who reveals to her Superboy is still alive and introduces her to Phantom Girl, who quickly explains the whole story about what really happened the day of the explosion. Following her escape, Phantom Girl seeked out J'emm's help to find Miss Martian, believing she is the key to getting Superboy back. M'gann is awestruck by the news and is determined to do whatever it takes to rescue Conner.

M'gann asks Phantom Girl to take her into the Phantom Zone in the hopes of convincing Conner to return, but Phantom Girl fails since the first time was by accident and even with their combined efforts remain unable. Fortunately, they are able to find another solution by using the Kaizer-Thrall and a Motherbox to lock onto the Phantom Zone's location and open a boom tube to rescue Superboy. However, as a precaution, they travel to Trombus, a planet under a red sun to ensure that if any Kryptonian criminals manage to escape, they cannot use their powers.

M'gann is able to make contact with Conner, but having lost trust in himself and afraid he might hurt her, Conner can't bring himself to exit the Phantom Zone. M'gann is prepared to enter, but comes under attack from Lor-Zod and Ma'alefa'ak, who corrupt the Kaizer-Thrall and when Conner leaves the Zone, he succumbs to all of his injuries and collapses next to M'gann.[52]

Despite being tortured, M'gann is able to sense Conner's pain and suffering, both physical and emotional while also learning he has regressed to his original Cadmus programming. However, they are separated again when Dru-Zod takes Superboy to the Fortress of Solitude. M'gann becomes more worried than ever over Conner's current state and sets out with the rest of the heroes, including the Legion of Super-Heroes and Bio-Ship back to Earth to rescue Superboy from the Zods.[56]

Miss Martian and Superboy reunion

Miss Martian and Superboy are together again at long last.

During the battle in Metropolis, Miss Martian reunites with Superboy and reestablishes their psychic connection. Superboy is scared and apprehensive of being around Miss Martian, warning her to stay away from him out of fear for her safety. Miss Martian reassures Superboy that he is neither a killer nor would he ever harm her and restores his memories of their life together, from the day they met to their last kiss on Mars. With his memories and mind restored, Conner and M'gann finally and officially reunite after months apart and proceed to fight alongside their friends in the final battle against the House of Zod.[57]

Tying the knot[]

A few days later, M'gann and Conner send out an online video invitation, announcing they are finally getting married. On September 16 in Happy Harbour, members of the Justice League, Team and Outsiders, both past and present, along with their family and friends gather together to attend the wedding. Before the ceremony, the Legionnaires return to their own time, but not before they wish Superboy both a wonderful wedding and life with Miss Martian. Clark, Dick, Kaldur, Will and Garfield serve as Conner's groomsmen while M'ree, Artemis, Zatanna, Raquel and Karen serve as M'gann's bridesmaids with Lucas officiating the ceremony and Jonny as the ring bearer.

Miss Martian and Superboy get married

Conner and M'gann finally get married and share their first kiss as a newlywed couple.

The wedding proceeds with Conner and M'gann being walked down the aisle by their parents and they begin their vows and exchange rings. Conner and M'gann proclaim their deepest and heartfelt love for each other. Conner confesses M'gann has been his whole heart since the day they met and because of her, he learned how to love and express it and in return, M'gann reveals Conner taught her the meaning of true love and commitment, with both promising to love and cherish each other for all eternity. Conner and M'gann are finally married and share their first kiss as husband and wife.[57]
