This article is about the third Aquaman. For the first, see Orin, and the second, see Kaldur'ahm.

La'gaan is the former protégé of Aquaman, and a former member of the Team known as Lagoon Boy. He was a classmate of Kaldur'ahm at the Conservatory of Sorcery, and joined the Justice League, sharing the mantle of Aquaman alongside Kaldur and Orin.

Personality[]

When he was younger, La'gaan was an eager student who wanted to know a lot about the surface world.[4]

He eventually adopts his superhero sobriquet, Lagoon Boy, inspired in part by his first name, as well as the movie "Creature from the Black Lagoon".[5]

By 2016, his demeanor was still easy-going during more casual situations. However, he has shown frustration at the lack of action he receives during field missions and has demonstrated times of aggressive impulsiveness when it comes to battle. He often uses Atlantean slang and euphemisms in his speech; he is especially fond of using "Neptune's Beard", and calling people who he does not particularly like as "Chum".[6] Some, like Superboy, consider him a jerk, a feeling that La'gaan returns, mostly out of jealousy in regards to the past relationship Superboy and Miss Martian shared.[7][8]

By 2020, he has greatly changed and matured, becoming more kind, caring and loving and enjoys playing with Prince Artur. He is also bisexual, showing he is a devoted husband in a happy polyamorous marriage to both his wife and husband while happily awaiting the birth of their child.[9] He is also revealed to regret his past behavior, particularly his treatment towards Superboy, admitting he held a petty grudge against him for years and expresses shame he cannot make amends for his actions or immature behavior. La'gaan also shows genuine remorse for both Kaldur and M'gann's pain over losing Conner and wishes he could somehow help.[10]

Physical appearance[]

Lagoon Boy is a male Atlantean with amphibious adaptations. He has green skin, red eyes and webbed ears, claws and feet. He has dark green fins on his head, the ends of which he has tied on a pony tail. He wears black shorts, and a black pouch around his ankle.[6]

In his "puffer mode"[11] his body is inflated like a puffer fish, with glowing mystic tattoos on his arms.[6]

History[]

Early life[]

La'gaan was originally not from the capital, but moved to Poseidonis to attend the Conservatory of Sorcery.[12]

With the other students, La'gaan came to Aqualad's aid when they were ambushed by purists. Ocean-Master's magic weakened him, but they won the day thanks to Topo's ink spout and Superboy's infrared vision. La'gaan could not participate in the final fight with Ocean-Master in the S'atiroman Cave.[14]

Gamma Squad discovered the location of the captured heroes, and found it was a spaceship, on the move. Miss Martian informed Red Tornado, who instructed Miss Martian and Lagoon Boy to follow, as it was their only option. However, Miss Martian did note that the vessel had a head start, and they could not keep up if it entered light speed.[21]

Lagoon Boy expressed his true feelings to Miss Martian of being accepted into the surface world. Miss Martian assured him that she was the same way on Mars, and revealed to La'gaan her true form. Lagoon Boy was unfazed by her appearance, prompting Miss Martian to take on a female form of Lagoon Boy. As the two were about to share a kiss, the Bio-Ship alerted them of an unidentified object in close proximity.[22]

When they arrived in New Orleans, they could not find anything suspicious above ground. They went underwater and reached the base of the Kroloteans. They hid from them, while Robin contacted Mal and informed him that they found the base. They were discovered by the Kroloteans and attacked. Lagoon Boy fought off the Kroloteans, until Blue Beetle took a Krolotean hostage and found the abductees. The abductees, including Secretary General Tseng, were terrified of his appearance, but eventually calmed down when he opened their cage with ease. They made it out of the base before its self-destruct caused it to explode. Back on the surface, their backup, the entire Justice League and Team, arrived.[6]

After the League learned of the location of the last Krolotean stronghold, they set up a plan of attack. Aquaman and Lagoon Boy were Beta Squad. They infiltrated Malina Island from the sea, prying open an underwater door and spying in the docks with a periscope. Manta discovered them, and shot his helmet plasma beams at them, but they evaded them. They leaped out of the water to stop the Manta Troopers that had started to fire on them.

Aquaman quickly sought out his main foe, but Manta shot him in the shoulder. While he recovered, Lagoon Boy took down Krolotean Mechs. Aquaman recovered, but found himself surrounded by Mechs. Delta Squad destroyed them for him.

Lagoon Boy, in his inflated form, stormed at Manta, giving Aquaman the opportunity to attack him from the flank. Manta's helmet was thrown clear, and Aquaman was shocked to see his former friend. Orin and Nightwing tried to reason, but Lagoon Boy and Kaldur'ahm saw only enmity. Kaldur escaped, but did notify them of a bomb that was set to go off. Wonder Woman and Wonder Girl swooped in to carry the two Atlanteans back to the Bio-Ship. They managed to outrun the blast.[25]

Artemis, who was not as close to Lagoon Boy as she was to the others, did not know how to respond.

Nightwing gave all present a briefing on the upcoming launch of a communications satellite that would open up communications between Earth and Mars. Since someone might try to sabotage it, Gamma Squad was dispatched to provide security.[8]

Lagoon Boy did not like his role in the plan: he was relegated to patrolling the water. He was jealous because Superboy was with Miss Martian. He spotted their enemy: Manta Troopers, lead by Kaldur'ahm. Lagoon Boy was ordered to wait for backup, but after Superboy called him a rookie, he ignored his orders and attacked.

Though he took down many Manta Troopers, Kaldur shocked him unconscious. He was captured and taken to the Manta-Flyer.[8]

For a little under a week, Lagoon Boy was experimented upon. The Reach's scientist exposed him to stress, hoping to learn about the Meta-Gene. As he was an average Atlantean only powered by sorcery, he was treated as a human.

When the Team infiltrated the Reach's laboratory, Batgirl, Bumblebee and Robin allowed themselves to be captured and were stored in the same lab as Lagoon Boy. They freed him, and with the others, they made their way to the loading bay. They made sure the captives boarded the Bio-Ship, and then had to hold off the Reach's enforcer, who Wonder Girl named "Black Beetle". The Team did not fare well against him, and one after the other, they were defeated. Lagoon Boy attempted to attack him from behind in his puffer mode, but he was electrocuted and thrown into a computer array.

Blue Beetle joined the fight, and held off the Black Beetle until the others escaped. The fight destroyed much of the ship, and Blue Beetle was thrown clear. Lagoon Boy swam to retrieve him, then boarded the ship. Once everyone was accounted for, La'gaan looked after his girlfriend.[28]

After Zeta-ing to a Chicago junkyard, La'gaan could wait no longer and asked M'gann what was going on between her and Conner. Before he could get a full reply, they were interrupted by Deathstroke and Tigress. Lagoon Boy called for help, then fought Deathstroke. Deathstroke broke La'gaan's leg, then knocked him out. Miss Martian was captured and taken away, just before Nightwing and Superboy arrived to find La'gaan left alone.

Nightwing and Superboy took La'gaan to a hospital. When he woke he insisted on attempting to rescue M'gann, and was enraged Superboy wasn't out looking for her. Nightwing revealed that Aqualad was a not a traitor and that Tigress was really Artemis. La'gaan was initially furious to have been left in the dark, but calmed down once Superboy said he was sure Nightwing had good reasons for keeping the secret from everyone. They then left La'gaan to rest.[3]

Along with the other members of the Team, Lagoon Boy infiltrated the Light-Reach summit disguised as an agent of the League of Shadows. After Aqualad's betrayal was discovered, Vandal Savage ordered the children to be killed. Lagoon Boy broke cover by knocking out his fellow Shadows, and battled against Ubu while in his pufferfish form. After Black Beetle stabbed Ra's al Ghul through the chest, Ubu disengaged from the battle, and escaped with his master's corpse. Lagoon Boy then assisted Miss Martian, who was reeling from the gigantic fire serpent Klarion transmogrified from Deathstroke's sword. Voluntarily throwing himself into the creature's mouth, Lagoon Boy activated his powers and ripped the serpent's head apart. This broke the spell, and he successfully cushioned Miss Martian from impact with the ground. She thanked him telepathically, and their gazes lingered on each other's faces for a moment before they broke off into different directions. The battle ended with the heroes victorious, with the capture of the Reach ambassador, Black Manta, the Brain, and Monsieur Mallah.[32]

Aqualad summoned everyone to the mission room, where Batman informed the Team that they would now operate side by side with the Justice League from the Watchtower. Not because Mount Justice was destroyed, but because they earned the right to do so. Aqualad informed the assembled that although the Team has accomplished much, a lot still needed to be done. He assigned Lagoon Boy to Gamma Squad to investigate Batgirl's lead about the whereabouts of Vandal Savage.[33]

Lagoon Boy later quit the Team and returned to Atlantis after learning Miss Martian and Superboy got back together. Although he resigned from the Team, he continued to act as a hero beneath the sea and to serve as Aquaman's protege. He was often tasked with specific assignments for his king.[36]

2016-2018[]

Lagoon Boy continued to hold a grudge against Superboy for years, but eventually managed to let go of his past grievances, but never properly made amends with Superboy.[10] At some point, he entered a polyamorous relationship with Coral and Rodunn. Later, La'gaan looked on as a giant pillar of flame appeared outside the city creating deadly red waters. He was frustrated when Orin ordered the dome kept sealed. He saw his best friend Blubber outside and was desperate to try to rescue him, having to be held back by Wyynde and Delphis lest he open the gate and let the red water into the city. Blubber was saved by Orin, and the pillar was extinguished by Mera, Ocean-Master and the stranger. La'gaan and the others rushed out once the waters were safe, witnessing the stranger save Mera and Kaldur from Ocean-Master. Once the stranger disarmed Orm, he was easily defeated by Orin, who had Wyynde and La'gaan place him under arrest.[38]

Kaldur, Wyynde and La'gaan used the ongoing unrest in Xebel to cover their entrance to the city. They made their way to the Grave of Legends, a holy site that marked the thinnest point between Xebel and the Undersea. Kaldur created a drill, while La'gaan lifted rocks and Wyynde directed debris away. Though they hoped Nereus's Watch would be too busy with the crowds to find them, a patrol did come close, but was distracted by a strange light caused by Delphis, who had followed them.[39]

After a month in the Undersea, the group had not found the crown, but had become adept at finding and dousing the geothermal vents that periodically erupted there. When La'gaan expressed concern at possibly missing the birth of his child, Kaldur reminded him that he needed to be 100% focused on the mission at hand. Wyynde tried to comfort La'gaan after Kaldur's harsh words, but La'gaan was not offended and wished he were as strong as Kaldur. Wyynde expressed concerns about Kaldur taking on too much, and not dealing with Conner's death, prompting La'gaan to admits his regrets about never getting to make amends for his grudge against Conner. Then, what they initially thought was another geothermal vent turned out to be a giant crab emerging from the sea floor. The group fled, but the crab sucked the group toward its mouth, until La'gaan allowed himself and a pillar of rock to be swallowed. The pillar was distasteful, so the crab spat La'gaan out and moved on.

The crab had emerged from a chasm, which the group then swam down. They found ruins from the ancient Atlantean capital, and the three magically trained members could all sense great magic power nearby. They fanned out to triangulate its location, and quickly found Arion's crown shallowly buried in the ground. Another giant creature then appeared. Kaldur took hold of the creature and rode it. He then shocked the creature to make it move, as the others grabbed ahold. They rode the creature as it swam upwards, jumping off just before the creature crashed into the ceiling of the Undersea, creating an opening for them to escape through.

They returned to Xebel to find Arion taking the mantle of High King. Before anything else could be said, Arion took the crown and donned it, but was immediately killed by the Lords of Order. Mera then went to crown Orin once more, but Orin insisted that it was Mera who satisfied the prophecy and was the rightful High King.

Later, La'gaan and Wyynde swam to the palace. La'gaan was glad Wyynde's doubts about Kaldur seemed unfounded, but Wyynde worried that would only lead Kaldur to take on even more. They reached the palace as Orin told Kaldur he wanted to return to the Justice League, Kaldur offered to relinquish the title of Aquaman, but Orin was confident the League could accommodate multiple Aquamen-including La'gaan, who was shocked and thrilled at the idea.

Later, he went to see his family and held his newborn child.[10]

Powers and abilities[]

Lagoon Boy puffer mode

Puffer mode.

  • Atlantean attributes: Atlanteans, although human, have through scientific and sorcerous means[4] developed several abilities which allow them to live comfortably under the sea:
    • Underwater breathing: All Atlanteans are capable of surviving the aquatic atmosphere under the sea. Some accomplish this without the presence of visible gills.[13][4]
    • Temperature resilience: Resistant to low temperatures[41] and the effects of freezing,[42] although notably hindered by high temperatures.[43]
    • Durability: Dense flesh, although not invulnerable.[44][4][28]
    • Strength: Ranging from undetected levels to super strength.[42][4][45]
  • Atlantean Sorcery: As La'gaan was a student at the Conservatory of Sorcery, he at least possesses a rudimentary level of sorcery.[13] He has skin icons which are invisible when not in use.[6]
    • Inflation: La'gaan can use Atlantean magic to enlarge his body, dramatically increasing his strength and durability. This is a particular technique that he had chosen to study at the Conservatory.[6][46] Because of the way his lips are pulled tight, La'gaan is unable to talk while inflated.[47]
    • Hydrokinesis: Through Atlantean sorcery, he has demonstrated a capacity to form hard water constructs, such as a serpent.[13]

Relationships[]

Aqualad[]

Main article: Aqualad

La'gaan and Kaldur are former classmates with both having attended and trained at the Conservatory of Sorcery until Kaldur left to take up the mantle of Aqualad and became Aquaman's protégé.[4] La'gaan strongly admired and idolized him.[27] When Aqualad apparently betrayed the Team and joined to side with his father, Black Manta, Lagoon Boy was enraged by this act, deeming him a traitor for turning against their king and furthermore when he "murdered" Artemis.[25][27] After discovering the truth of the deep cover mission, La'gaan was furious by the deception and how he almost hurt Kaldur.[3]

Despite learning the truth, La'gaan remained angry and hurt by the secrecy, believing Kaldur did not trust him until they mended fences when Kaldur assured his trust in La'gaan to take his place on the Team following his departure.[33] By 2020, La'gaan and Kaldur's friendship is fully restored and they now share the mantle of Aquaman alongside their returning former mentor.[10]

Miss Martian[]

Main article: Miss Martian
Main article: Lagoon Boy and Miss Martian

Miss Martian is Lagoon Boy's ex-girlfriend. Not long after Superboy broke up with her, Miss Martian quickly struck up a romance with Lagoon Boy.[22] They had an open relationship, kissing in public, overly affectionate and Lagoon Boy referred to Miss Martian as his "Angelfish".[6] However, the relationship between them was not based on real love, but out of comfort and selfishness. La'gaan found acceptance from M'gann over his "impure" appearance while M'gann realized La'gaan made her feel better about herself after she began abusing her powers and damaged her relationship with Conner, though she refused to admit it at first.[22][8] In the aftermath of her attack against Aqualad, the "spark" in M'gann and La'gaan's relationship quickly started to falter when M'gann actively began avoiding him and showed no interest in his affection anymore.[3] Eventually, M'gann finally ended the relationship after she came to terms and realized the error of her ways, confessing La'gaan was nothing more than her rebound guy and felt he deserved better.[31]

Superboy[]

Main article: Superboy

Lagoon Boy and Superboy strongly disliked each other and had a rivalry over Miss Martian. Both were jealous of the other's relationship with M'gann. Conner was angry and upset whenever he saw M'gann and La'gaan together, especially when La'gaan actively enjoyed flaunting their new romance in Conner's presence while La'gaan was quick to jealousy whenever the former couple were alone together. Because of their rivalry it often times caused tension and problems for the Team during missions.[6][26][8] Although Conner was unhappy with their relationship, he did not interfere, acknowledging that though he considered La'gaan a jerk, he does treat M'gann right, but Conner also knew that La'gaan was nothing more than the rebound guy.[7][8]

When Miss Martian broke things off with Lagoon Boy, he realized one of the reasons behind their break up was because of Superboy, causing him to hold a grudge against Superboy for years, but overtime managed to let it go. Following Conner's apparent death, La'gaan expresses his deepest regret and remorse over how unfairly he had treated Conner in the past and admits he is shameful he never got the chance to make amends over his petty grudge against him.[31][10]

Appearances[]

Background information[]

  • When designing his puffer mode, Phil Bourassa's biggest visual inspiration was Kool-Aid Man. The way his lips are pulled back on Bourassa's design lead to Lagoon Boy being unable to speak while in puffer mode.[47]
  • An Atlantean character in the Teen Titans animated series named Tramm has similar traits to Lagoon Boy, including the ability to inflate his body to enhance his strength.
  • Lagoon Boy was originally introduced as a minor supporting character in the Aquaman comics in the late '90s. He did not, however, pick up in popularity until his appearances in the Young Justice comic series, during which he appeared in the "Sins of Youth" crossover and even acted as a stand-in member of the team. He made his last notable appearance during the Titans East Special #1, where he, along with the rest of his team, was injured by the demon Trigon. Prior to the events of Flashpoint, he was still in a coma. He made his debut in the New 52 as a part of the 2018 DC limited series, Heroes in Crisis, which he died in his first, and subsequently, only appearance thus far.
