Bette is a girl in her mid-teens. She has blue eyes and medium length curly blonde hair. She wears the Gotham Academy uniform when in school.[2]
Five years later she's shown to be quite taller with a slender frame. Her hair has fewer curls and is longer being worn tied back into a low ponytail. She is seen wearing a black cocktail dress with two bangles on her right arm and white stud earrings.[3]
Bette welcomed new student Artemis Crock on the first day of the new school year. She acted as her student liaison at Gotham Academy. When Dick Grayson took an unexpected photo of himself with Artemis, Bette flippantly told Artemis to ignore the freshman and continued to show her around.[4][2]
When all adults went missing, Bette and Barbara helped shelter many younger children in the Gotham Academy. She played with a couple of babies to keep them calm.[5]
Bette dragged Artemis along to crash the birthday party of Dick Grayson, the richest kid in Gotham, though neither knew him well. They were met at the door by the Manor butler although Dick welcomed them himself quickly.[6]

Dick and girls played a game of tabletop football, until they were interrupted by Alfred, who brought them pizza.[7]
Bette had spent the night with a handsome boy whose name she had forgotten. She overheard him talking to someone, caught that it was his birthday and congratulated him. She didn't like that she was older than him—and promised she wasn't much older. But he already knew her name and age, and she realized why when she saw a yearbook on his table: they both went to Gotham Academy. She wanted to stay with him longer, but she had to go to work.[3]
In the comics, tennis star Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Kane was the first "Bat-girl," having worked alongside her aunt Kathy Kane (Batwoman). Later, following the introduction of Barbara Gordon as the new Batgirl, the character was reworked as Betty "Flamebird" Kane. Currently she is a sidekick-in-training to her cousin, Kate Kane, the new Batwoman.
